Cauterets Hike Pont d’Espagne to base Pic Vignemale

The next day we were lucky once more as when we woke in the morning there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. We had a short drive to our chosen hike which was up to the Lac de Gaube and then further on up the valley towards the pic Vignemale which is the highest peak in the French Pyrenees at 3298m. It was a hike recommended to us and we knew it was going to be busy down the bottom but we’re told the further we went the more it would open out. Well this turned out to be the case and once again after we slogged it up the hill for the first hour we were treated with an amazing view of a beautiful turquoise lake.

It was at this point that we also exited the shade and coolness of the close valley and enjoyed the radiant sun. We soon warmed up and continued up the valley very impressed by the views all the way up. We got to have lunch at the top of the valley gazing at a waterfall just below the pic Vignemale and the view was just spectacular.

The trip down was almost just a lovely as the trip up but it has to be said that this being the first day of the first week of August we noticed that the numbers of visitors were definitely a lot more than the week before. It didn’t detract from the hike but we will just have to keep getting up early to try and beat the crowds! T
