We had a couple of nights of good food and good company in Kuttabul with Susan and Frank and the family. We had stocked up on water and electricity and on their recommendation went barely an hour up the road to Midge Point.
The name was a little daunting but as it turned out fairly inaccurate (luckily). It was a very sleepy small beachside town with a tavern, a campsite and I am pretty sure I saw a sign for a grocery store but was told it was shut on Mondays and Tuesdays. We didn’t want much more and while the campsite was fairly full everyone there was enjoying the peace and quiet as well as the space surrounding all the sites which was lovely.
It was a short stroll down to the beach and once there we were looking out towards the Whitsunday island group with whales frolicking in the bay. The humpback whales undertake a migration from the Antarctic every year during the Australian winter to enjoy the warmer seas of North Queensland and while they were only specs in the distance they were still great to see.
Part of the reason they were specs in the distance was because the beach itself was so huge. We measured one day that it was 500m from where the sand began to where the ocean was!! There were teams of soldier crabs everywhere and we had a great time walking up and down.
This is a truly amazing part of the world and while we have driven passed many of these places on plenty of occasions we have never had the time to stop and enjoy them. If they are all like this then we are in for a truly fantastic time! T
