So with the dog looking like he was on his last legs and a week long storm brewing we set off from Tumut south into the Snowy Mountains and our destination of Jindabyne. We had absolutely no idea what the scenery was going to be like but within 50km the road started gaining altitude from 300m to 1200m whereupon we arrived on the Snowy Mountain range. It is a mountain scenery quite unlike any other we have seen and once we had gained the altitude the view was one of rolling hills rather than huge mountains. It was pretty spectacular.
The weather also held off so we had superb views as we arrived in Jindabyne. This is a place we have been meaning to come to for quite some time yet due to one reason or another we had not made the trip. The scenery the lake and the small town looked just fantastic as we drove in. There were mountain bikes a plenty and all the shops were selling snow sports gear and I think I always get a little excited when arriving in and ski town.
Unfortunately the promised rain arrived on our first night and continued for just about the whole week. We didn’t mind too much as it meant we had time to rest and luckily Griff made a pretty good recovery too! It was nice being in a house and having a kitchen and living room, unfortunately the two main things we were looking for were a washing machine and a dishwasher and the cottage had neither. Hardships?
It wasn’t consistent rain throughout the week and we were able to venture out on walks around the lake which even with the cloudy ski was still very picturesque.
The other main summer sport apart from hiking is mountain biking and there are some amazing tracks around Jindabyne and up Thredbo mountain. Unfortunately the heavy recent rains have meant that the main attraction the “Thredbo Valley Track” was shut for the whole week so we had to be content with riding around the tracks near the lake. I will be honest and say that the tracks were all a bit too wet and muddy but we could definitely see that when it dries out it will be amazing!!
We did end up having one sunny day right at the end of our first week and we certainly made the most of it!! The whole place just looked even more amazing with a bit of sun on it and we had a superb walk with Griff around the lake before heading off on a couple of bike rides the second of which was a fantastic easy green which gave us some superb views!
Then it was time for us to pack up and relocate to another Airbnb just a couple of km down the road where I was going to see Mum and Dad for the first time in about 2.5 years. Yay!!!! T
