Khancoban

We were so excited to be back on the road! After two weeks to the day of delays due to COVID and bad weather we were packing up at Jindabyne and heading out! The weather really turned it on for our departure with a perfect blue bird day. Our destination was Khancoban which was mainly picked due to the fact that we used to live near a Khancoban street and the campground was beside a little lake.

The drive was interesting to say the least. We were only travelling 46kms as the crow flies but we had to drive 206km up and down a few mountains to get there. The scenery was spectacular and at one stage we even crossed over a one lane dam wall. Luckily no one was coming the other way! We did drive through a lot of bushfire affected land but signs of life were starting to show with green shoots poking through on the trees.

When we arrived at Khancoban we were greeted with a sign stating that the reception was closed due to a bout of COVID hitting the campsite but as we were pretty much invincible after just recovering from it we were pretty okay with camping there. We were not disappointed as the views from our campsite were spectacular! We managed a lovely walk along the lakes edge with Griff and then back for a few drinks around the campfire. Being back camping again was bliss!

The next day was my birthday and after a walk across the dam wall we went for a hit of golf at the local course. Not quite up to the usual country golf club we were used to as the greens were unplayable due to being so wet but we went out anyway. Unfortunately after 3 holes the weather set in and that was it for the rest of the day.

The weather was not kind to us for the rest of the stay and coupled with the rain the temps dropped as well. We did manage a trip to a town just down the road called Corryong which had a festival to honour the poem The Man From Snowy River by Banjo Patterson so the town was packed. We would have loved to go check it out but unfortunately Griffy was not allowed so had to make do with walking around town and soaking up the atmosphere.

We did manage a fire on the last night overlooking the lake which was nice but we are hightailing it out of the mountains as it’s getting too cold for us! S
