Mildura

We spent a bit of time by the river at Narrandera planning what the next stage of our trip was going to entail and we soon noticed that the Mundi Mundi Bash was going to be on near Broken Hill at more or less the same time as we were planning to pass through. As it is an event which attracts 4,000 campervans and trailers we thought the best thing to do would be to get ourselves a couple of tickets and join in.

This left us with a journey of about 800km which we had about 4 days to do. Unfortunately the weather wasn’t being too friendly and we had to expect a large rain front coming directly on our route so we decided to just do the journey in 2 big hits the first of which was a 500km drive due west to a place called Mildura.

I sort of expected the drive to take us into the outback of NSW but we were travelling next to the Murrumbidgee river and the the countryside was pretty fertile and green. Couple that with grey skies and an impending storm and it was a fairly uninspiring and long drive.

Mildura itself was a lot bigger than we expected with a population of about 50,000 it serves a a hub for the local farming area. It also seemed to provide most of Australia’s grapes and everywhere you turned there were grapevines. It gave certain parts of the place an almost Mediterranean feel.

The town sits on the Murray River and we had a nice walk along it looking at all the houseboats available to hire.

It was quite a culture shock coming from the tranquility of Narrandera and spending time by the river to being in such a large place. It also didn’t help that all the campsites were heavily booked so we ended up crammed into a place on the outskirts of town, with good access to the motorway (we were on it) and good access to the airport (again we were on it!!!)

Still it wasn’t too bad as we just had to see out the stormy weather and get ourselves stocked up for our upcoming trip to the festival and then out further west.

As soon as the rain stopped we headed out to a local golf course which was right on the river and was a luscious green. Unfortunately we didn’t have much time for anything else but we were stocked up and ready to go! T
