Cahors

Our meandering around France was really quite fantastic but we did have a goal of enjoying the Pyrenees and after getting a little taste of the mountains we decided to jump on the péage motorway and make a bee line for the southern border and continue our meandering down there.

This was going against our plan of staying off of the motorways but was going to make the journey a whole lot easier and we thought we would combine it with a stop off at Cahors.

The drive was really easy and fast with us hardly troubling the speed limit of 130 km/h but still making good headway. It was a shame to miss out on what looked like some pretty countryside but we can’t see everything.

Cahors itself was a very old town and the centre was surrounded on three sides by the river Lot and had retained and preserved all its old buildings. It was really nice to walk around the streets soaking up the atmosphere. The only downside we noticed was that it was in fact not really a functional town centre which we found out when we went searching for a store to buy some ingredients for lunch. Yes there were plenty of touristy shops but no “real” grocery stores.

These were all located out of town and a drive away for us. In fact having the town surrounded by the “functional” part of Cahors meant that we found that we were about 20km away from the Malbec wineries, the fois gras and even the walks. So we decided to cut our stay short, jump back on the motorway and head off to the Pyrenees. Mountains here we come!! T
