The odds of undertaking a 30 day long hike without encountering some rain I presume are pretty slim it’s just unfortunate that our weather forecast for the first couple of days was just quite so bad. We woke this morning and just put our rain gear on straight away and headed down to see what was on offer for breakfast.
To be fair the day started well, breakfast was huge and delicious even finishing off with a cherry tart and so with full bellies we headed off on our days hike.
To be fair it wasn’t actually raining when we set off and while it was cloudy and cold it was actually really nice hiking weather. The only main downside being that we should have been enjoying views of snow capped mountain ranges in the distance but the reality was that we couldn’t see more that a couple of hundred metres.
We only had about 14km to walk today and we began by wandering through the vineyards and fruit trees before we turned up a path and headed into some dense woods. At this point it did start raining and while it was still nice walking through the woods I am sure we would have been able to see a whole lot more if we weren’t blinkered by our wet weather gear and the fact that there is an element of just keeping your head down and trudging on through the rain.

Once again our spirits were kept high by the fact that we weren’t camping and so instead of having to set up a wet camp in the wet we were able to check into our warm and dry apartment for the afternoon and set about drying everything off.
It would have been nice if we could have taken our time and sat and enjoyed the views but unfortunately we didn’t really have the chance but the weather forecast is looking slightly better for tomorrow and the following days look pretty clear so we get to enjoy some more views then.
The other slight annoyance with the rain on this section of the hike is that it is the most remote part of the hike and so there are no restaurants or towns for us to pass the time in so our meals are noodles or rehydrated camp food. Still it will just make the arrival of towns and restaurants all the more exciting when we get to Tolmin in 3 days time. Plus our packs just get lighter everyday as we eat all the food! T
