Day 5 Juliana Trail (Tolmin rest day)

When we were planning the trip we decided that we would take the time and do all the recommended side trips so we found ourselves waking up and not needing to get a move on. After yesterday’s effort both of us were pretty glad for it as our bodies were a little sore. Mostly our calves and knees from the up hills but I won’t lie and say everything else was great either.

We found some coffee and breakfast and then restocked all our snacks and food for the next few days from the local supermarket and then headed out to the Tolmin gorges which were only about 3kms outside of the town centre.

The gorges are formed at the confluence of two streams coming together out of the Triglav National Park and the colour of the water is a beautiful cloudy blue due to the limestone walls of the gorges. The paths cut into the side of the rock are pretty impressive and the drop down even more so.

After so many days of not seeing anyone it was quite bizarre having to share the paths with others. My little legs were protesting a bit as there was quite a bit of up and down but it was nice to not have the big pack on my back.

After the gorges we made the walk back into town. All of the houses you pass all have immaculately kept gardens and most have vegetable patches in the back as well. Some even rival the size of my father’s and that is saying something. Once we got back home we spent the afternoon resting our legs and of course had to wander down to the bar for a sneaky beer. It would be rude not to. Of course we had to have ice cream as well and I think my favourite thing about Slovenia so far is that when you order one scoop of ice cream you get two and you get to choose two different flavours. So really it’s two for one. I tested it and ordered two scoops and got the option of four. Life is never bad when you get to eat copious amounts of ice cream. S
