Day 12 Juliana Trail (Tarvisio to Kranjska Gora)

We headed out from Tarvisio centre and jumped on the old rail line which has been converted into a rail trail or bike path. We thought this was great as we were not on a road. After not having a great time yesterday I think we would have had serious thoughts of catching a taxi if it was on a road. However the novelty soon wore off as it was just km after km of paved walkway. The scenery around was nice but not beautiful and the temperature was climbing. But as with a lot of circular multi day hikes sometimes you just have to put the kms in to get to the next idilic spot.

We were about 10kms in when we hit our first town and came across a lovely restaurant with outdoor seating and we decided that the monotony of bike trail hiking should be broken up by a lovely lunch with a cold beer. It certainly hit the spot and we continued on our way.

The sun was baking us by this stage and we had the option of a little detour through a wetland which we thought would be a nice change from the bike path. Unfortunately the wet land was not that wet and it just meant that we had walked an additional km for not a lot of gain.

Back on the trail we passed a tiny little ski resort with a single poma lift and a lovely little wooden restaurant with umbrellas out and deck chairs. It looked too good to pass up so we thought we would stop again and have a drink. This time we tried the Union 0% lemon radler and it was delicious.

Soon we were entering into Kranjska Gora and the views were lovely. Kranjska is one of the bigger ski resorts in Slovenia and the town centre is very picturesque. Needless to say with all our stops a 19km hike that was supposed to take us 5 hours took a little longer. But it was worth it. Hopefully now we will be back to more traditional hiking tracks and off the road and bike trails.

After today’s efforts we thought we would reward ourselves with a lovely meal and found ourselves sitting out near the ski slopes watching the sun set and the cows graze in the fields. The meal was absolutely huge and both decided we were lucky we had another 18kms tomorrow to walk it off. S
