As always there were a couple of options driving to our next destination of Cauterets. One was through the mountains and the other out of the valleys and around passing the mountain range. The cloud cover over the mountains made the decision a little easier as our trip through the mountains would have resulted inContinue reading “Cauterets”

Cauterets Hike Pont d’Espagne to Refuge Wallon
The next morning the sun came out and the sky was perfectly blue so off we went on our first hike. While there were plenty of hikes leaving from the town some others were a short drive away leaving from a spot called the Pont d’Espagne. It doesn’t take long for us to pack upContinue reading “Cauterets Hike Pont d’Espagne to Refuge Wallon”
Cauterets Hike Soum de Mauloc to Ilheou lake
Unlike Luchon Cauterets was definitely all open and had a bit of a holiday buzz about the place. We thought we would take advantage of the access to the top of the mountain being open and took the gondala up on our second day. While we were up there we thought we would have aContinue reading “Cauterets Hike Soum de Mauloc to Ilheou lake”
Cauterets Hike Pont d’Espagne to base Pic Vignemale
The next day we were lucky once more as when we woke in the morning there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. We had a short drive to our chosen hike which was up to the Lac de Gaube and then further on up the valley towards the pic Vignemale which is the highest peakContinue reading “Cauterets Hike Pont d’Espagne to base Pic Vignemale”
Luz hike – Pic de midi
We awoke to glorious blue skies so packed up quickly and were soon on the road to our next destination of Luz I think only about 10kms away as the crow flies but over the other side of a few mountains so it took us about half an hour. We had to wait for receptionContinue reading “Luz hike – Pic de midi”
Luz
Luz was another cute mountain town about the same size as Cauterets. Our campsite was walking distance to the town and on the walk in we had lovely views of an old ciditel perched on one of the surrounding hillsides. The main street was filled with the usual mix of restaurants, gift shops and storesContinue reading “Luz”
Luz Hike – Cirque du Troumouse
The weather was going to be glorious the next day so we decided to tick off another of the must do hikes in the area. I was a little tired and sore from the previous two day’s epic hikes but soldiered on and pretty much from the start the views made it all worth it.Continue reading “Luz Hike – Cirque du Troumouse”
Luz Hike – Cirque d’Estaubé
A few of the hikes we had done so far had been recommended by the Lonely Planet guidebook and we have often found that if a hike is recommended in the book it is certainly worth doing. The Cirque d’Estaube was one of these hikes and so we once again packed up the van andContinue reading “Luz Hike – Cirque d’Estaubé”
Luz – Hike Barèges
Feeling full of energy and keen for one last big hike before we left the Pyrenees I was given the task of finding a hike which was not going to be too busy, not involve climbing over 800m and hopefully afford us some beautiful views. Easy. The hike I picked had us leaving from theContinue reading “Luz – Hike Barèges”
Canal de midi
We were flicking through the Lonely Planet trying to decide where we would head to after the Pyrenees and we came across a little must not miss box which spoke about the Canal De Midi. A feat of French engineering in the 17th century which took 12000 people 15 years to build, a 241km canalContinue reading “Canal de midi”
