We kind of cheated with our transport today and opted for an air conditioned taxi for the 2 hour trip north to Chennai instead of the local bus. Our excuse was that we were only spending one night in Chennai so wanted to get there as quick as possible. It had nothing to do withContinue reading “Chennai formerly known as Madras”

Chennai to Mysore
Early rise this morning for our 6 am train and we seemed to spend the whole walk from our hotel to the train station walking passed people asleep. There were staff from the hotel asleep on the stairs on the way down to the lobby, then as we walked outside and got nearer the stationContinue reading “Chennai to Mysore”
The Magnificent Mysore Palace
The main attraction at Mysore, the palace, didn’t open until 10am so we thought we would have a look at some of the other sights in Mysore by way of a warm up. First stop was Government House and why this was recommended as a place to see I will never know. There was nothingContinue reading “The Magnificent Mysore Palace”
Arrival in Bangalore
We caught a late morning train into Bangalore and the trip was pretty uneventful. We had our seats and air conditioning so all rather comfortable really. As we started hitting the outskirts of the city we caught our first real glimpse of congested living in India. Concrete jungle is an apt phrase as buildings almostContinue reading “Arrival in Bangalore”
The IPL at Bangalore
I won’t lie, I woke up quite excited this morning as we had tickets for the IPL game between Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Mumbai Indians. The game didn’t start until 4 pm though so we thought we would take advantage and see a bit of what Bangalore had to offer. First stop was theContinue reading “The IPL at Bangalore”
Another day in Bangalore
We had another day in Bangalore as our train to Hampi didn’t leave until 10pm. So after a lazy start we headed out to the Sri Radha Krishna temple to see the Hare Krishnas. The grounds were huge and judging by the crowd barriers set up and the number of spots to leave your shoesContinue reading “Another day in Bangalore “
Wonderful Hampi!
The only reason I knew that I had slept on the train was that I woke up early just in time to see the sun rise and get ready for our arrival in Hospet the train station serving Hampi. We really weren’t sure what to expect but we had a suspicion it was going toContinue reading “Wonderful Hampi!”
Hampi Day 2
The sites of Hampi are spread over 36 sq km and there are apparently 3700 monuments scattered around. Hampi was once the Empire Vijayanagar which at its peak housed 500,000 people. As the site is so huge we had organized a rickshaw with Veejay the guy who picked us up yesterday and started in theContinue reading “Hampi Day 2”
Surprisingly Fantastic Bijapur
We were struggling with where to go after Hampi, we knew we wanted to head north but our options for going to Pune directly involved night buses and we didn’t fancy travelling that far by night which we didn’t think was going to involve much sleep and we wouldn’t see any of the countryside. SoContinue reading “Surprisingly Fantastic Bijapur”
Pune
We had a distance of 350kms to travel from Bijapur to Pune and according to the man at the enquiries desk at the bus station the day before, there were buses every half an hour in the morning but it would take us a good 7 to 8 hours to get there. We both decidedContinue reading “Pune”
