The stretch between Winton and Longreach was the first time we were retracing our tracks and so we decided to try a couple of different stops. I will hold up my hand and say that I chose Wellshot Pub just outside of Longreach as it sounded like a great little pub and we thought it would be a great spot to enjoy a Friday night of watching Rugby League.
We were pretty amazed by the numbers of campers and caravans on the road from Winton towards Longreach and sure enough by the time we got to Wellshot the pub campsite was full and the neighbouring campground was filling up quickly too. We got a spot which unfortunately was as close as possible to the toilets and we just about squeezed ourselves in. Still we weren’t that bothered as we were planning on a night out at the pub so off we went.
I had called previously to check that the pub was open for dinner and that the footy games would be on. Unfortunately they forgot to tell us that the dining room was shut so there would be just a limited menu and that a singer was on so while the football was indeed on the screen the volume wasn’t on.
We gave the place a good go but after enjoying a superb game between the Cowboys and the Sea Eagles with the whole bar facing the screen while the singer valiantly sung out some very old classics behind us our meals arrived and were terrible so we high tailed it back to the van to watch the second game on the iPad.
It was a shame because the place could have been great but we actually decided one night was enough and left. T
