It was tough waking up this morning. We were both definitely feeling a little tired and sore but we got ourselves ready and put on our boots and our backpacks and headed off once again straight up the side of the valley. We had just under 20km to do but it was really the last big stage of our trip as the next day was a short hop of just 8km from Most Na Soci to Tolmin. So it was that thought that got us going up the hill for what was going to be another day of continuous ascending or descending culminating in 1000m of both ups and downs.
Our climb this time was through a forest that was a little different to the others we have been through here in Slovenia in that it was quite mossy and rocky. It was perfect conditions for spotting salamanders which are meant to be here in this area. Unfortunately as hard as we tried we couldn’t see any and so will probably go the whole trip without seeing one alive (we have seen quite a few squished on the roads so we know they are here).
We exited the forest and were again heading through fields and villages up and down and down and up and eventually we came upon a sign for a waterfall that we had been told by the guidebook (and out host in Podbrdo) was an easy 10 minute walk and well worth the detour. Well I am not convinced that either were correct about it being easy especially with packs on as it was a steep climb up but when we got there it was definitely worth it. Well had the place to ourselves and it was like walking into air conditioning out of the humidity of the day. We took our shoes off and enjoyed a break while watching the water cascading down from the cliffs above.
After we got going again we headed up through another series of tiny villages until we headed up once again to get to a quite special viewpoint. We ended up gazing both back at Tolmin (our end point of the whole hike) and Most Na Soci (our destination for the day). It was also wonderful to see the beautiful Soca river once again and the whole area was quite a sight to behold.
It was also was a great vantage point for us to be able to see where we had hiked previously. We could see the range the we had started on and where we had first come down to Tolmin and stretched out ahead of us was the Soca river and we could see where we had walked up toward Kobarid and then onwards from there. It was a really great spot to have a handful of nuts and sit back for a while.
From there the descent seemed pretty easy, the storm which had been threatening all day hadn’t developed (although the humidity probably was just as bad) and we could see our final destination of the the day which would surely mean the opportunity of a couple of beers and a bit of food! Winning! T
